This pill is for females that can't use the combined pill, it is for women over 35 and those that smoke. The pack has 28 pills and is taken every day of the menstrual cycle. It is 99% successful at preventing pregnancy (1 in 100 women will get pregnant in a calendar year).

The progestogen only pill works in two ways, it thickens the neck of the womb so it is harder for sperm to penetrate into the womb and get to the egg. The second thing this pill achieves is to think the lining of the womb, so there is less chance of a fertilised egg connecting to the womb and being able to grow.

Emergency contraceptive pill

Also known as the morning after pill, after having sexual intercourse where the female was unprotected, either by a condom breaking or simply not using any other type of contraception.
