Propecia (Finasteride)
The main medical use for Propecia is for “Male pattern baldness”, or it's scientific name Androgenic alopecia. Propecia is an Orally taken medication and can only be used by men. The main ingredient in Propecia is Finasteride, this is an enzyme that inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone.
Male pattern baldness is a common condition, where men experience thinning on the top of the head and/or the middle of the head. This condition starts normally in the mid to late 20s.
Propecia, pronounced "Pro-pee-sha" is available in a 1mg dose, and must NOT be taken by women or children. It is taken once a day with or without food. Patients need to take Finasteride for at least 3 months or more before the effects of the product can be seen. If after 12 months there is no visible effects that Propecia is helping further treatment is unlikely to help.
Will Propecia work for me
Propecia increases the number of scalp hairs in the first year of treatment helping to fill in the balding areas of the scalp. During the first year most men will see a slowing of hair loss. Results will differ, generally you will not be able to grow back all the hair you have lost.
What if I stop taking Propecia
Once you stop taking Propecia you will likely lose the hair you have gained within 12 months of stopping the treatment.
Propecia Prescription
Propecia is only available using a valid prescription; in the UK it is legal to complete an online medical questionnaire. It is then reviewed by a registered doctor to verify that the product is suitable for the patient with the given answers. The online medical will only take a few minutes to complete but must be done with honestly.
Propecia Side Effects
As with all prescription medication there can be side adverse side effects. A small number men 2%, had some of the following, sexual desire was less, difficulty in achieving an erection and a decrease in the number of semen. These side effects went away when men stopped taking Propecia. They also disappeared in most men that continued to take Propecia.
