The most common way of measuring whether a person status in weight is throught calculating the body mass index (BMI). That is done by dividing the weight of the person in kilograms by their height in meters. In Adults a BMI between 25 to 29.9 means that a person is considered to be overweight, and a BMI of over 30 means a person is considered obese.

Why people are overweight

Excess weight is caused by an imbalance between calories consumed and energy burned from the body. Your body is always burning energy, even when sleeping. The most common way of calculating your body's minimum daily requirement is to use the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Once you have this figure you need consider how active you are this calculation is known as the Harris Benedict Equation.

If you are unsure about BMI and what would be a good target consult a doctor and they can then refer you to a dietican or nutritionist. In some cases they will prescribe medication on the NHS for extreme cases, maxpharm can offer a private prescriptions for a treatment called Xenical and also a natural botanical extract.
